Stability conditions for hydrogen-antihydrogen-like quasimolecules

چکیده
We present a detailed study of the stability conditions of hydrogen-antihydrogen–like quasimolecules using both variational and finite-size scaling calculations. The stability diagram of the nuclear charge Z as a function of the internuclear distance R shows bound and unbound regions separated by a first-order critical line. Calculations of the leptonic annihilation rate show a peculiar behavior for nuclear charges Z 2, which was not observed for the hydrogen-antihydrogen quasimolecule; it goes through a maximum before it decays exponentially for large interhadronic distances. This might have a practical impact on the study of stability of matterantimatter systems.

Diatomic systems containing antihydrogen
Experimental success in production of antihydrogen (H̄) atoms [1, 2] has stimulated investigations of atom-H̄ systems. In these experiments the H̄ atoms were produced in Rydberg (highly excited) states. Trapping of antihydrogen atoms in external (electromagnetic) fields will allow for comparative spectroscopic investigation of H̄ atoms as well as their interactions with ordinary matter atoms. متن کاملLow-temperature antihydrogen-atom scattering
A simple method to include the strong force in atom–antiatom scattering is presented. It is based on the strong-force scattering length between the nucleon and antinucleon. Using this method elastic and annihilation cross sections are calculated for hydrogen–antihydrogen and helium–antihydrogen scattering. The results are compared to first-order perturbation theory using a pseudo potential. The...
متن کاملAn Antihydrogen Interferometer for Measuring Antimatter Gravity
The gravitational force on antimatter has never been directly measured, largely because electromagnetic forces overwhelm gravitational forces and no form of low-energy neutral antimatter has been available. However, the technology to make low-energy antihydrogen is currently being developed. We have designed an atomic interferometer that can measure the force of gravity on hydrogen or antihydro...
متن کاملTowards antihydrogen confinement with the ALPHA antihydrogen trap
ALPHA is an international project that has recently begun experimentation at CERN’s Antiproton Decelerator (AD) facility. The primary goal of ALPHA is stable trapping of cold antihydrogen atoms with the ultimate goal of precise spectroscopic comparisons with hydrogen. We discuss the status of the ALPHA project and the prospects for antihydrogen trapping.
